Taira Giordani, researcher at Quantum Lab of the Department of Physics oat Sapienza University of Rome, is among the six winners of the 24th edition of the L’Oréal-UNESCO “For Women in Science” Young Talents Italy Award. Each year, the program awards six prizes worth €20,000 to support the work of young female scientists under the age of 35 engaged in specific disciplinary fields: Life Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, Computer and Information Sciences, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, and Technologies. The Award jury selected the six most deserving projects, including the research on photonic quantum computers conducted within the Department of Physics at Sapienza.
Taira Giordani specializes in the development of platforms for photonic quantum technologies. At the Quantum Lab of the Department of Physics, she will lead a project centered on QOLOSSUS, an advanced quantum computer prototype developed in collaboration with the Institute for Photonics and Nanotechnologies of the National Research Council (IFN-CNR). The research focuses on devices that use single particles of light within miniaturized optical circuits, guiding them through microscopic pathways known as waveguides. The central goal of the research will be to certify that the platform behaves as a controllable and programmable quantum system. This is a fundamental step toward transforming the prototype into a fully functional processor capable of executing complex algorithms: from the generation of random numbers for secure cryptography to machine learning algorithms, and the simulation of molecules and complex systems.
